Product name in Compare module shows Category >>Subcategory >> Product Name

Product names are showing their Category/Subcategory/Product Name in Compare button as inSmartScoop Litter Box ← Feline Waste Management – Litter Boxes And Accessories and for some reason "←" character is showing as a "→". How can I fix this? Please see illustrations below.
Interestingly, since one of the last theme updates, the newly added products are showing only the name of the product, as it should be.How can I get rid of the Parent Category/Subcategory/ in Compare module (and in the Product List):
