Child Theme?

Do I need to create a child theme before updating my theme (FlyingNews) in order to save my current theme settings? I haven't modified the code in any way, I don't think. I have saved a backup of my current theme options and copied the text under "Transfer Theme Options Data."Does that mean that I can update the theme, paste in the Theme Options Data I have saved, and my website will have all the same settings?Will I lose my widgets or plugins?Sorry if this is a total beginner question. I want to be sure I don't mess this up.
