search results page with sidebar display issues

We would like to keep the same style in search results as we do on the shop or category pages. If we choose to show the sidebar we only get two columns of products. We would prefer1 (ideally) to match whatever style is used for product category/shop pagesor2 at least show more columns on search results (3 or 4)--- and as we noted in the ongoing related case, there is no "add to cart" option on search results.
