Featured area - footer featured area difference

As I have mentioned your documentation is disappointing and makes no explanation of;
1. what the featured area and footer featured areas differences are?????
2. Why would someone use this on home page only rather than using the revo builder?
3. Also i have installed your demo for goodstore03 in a sandbox installation and in the widget area there is the following widget areas
Yet in the live installation if I try to add a featured footer area it asks for a page id
can you explain please
