Adding text to Search field + ajax search

Store owner has requested that we add guidance text (like "Search Store") that is visible before you click on the search (in top right corner, the loop)Also if text can be added into the search field which is visible upon click, that would be good too.How do I go about that. I am figuring a child-theme customization would be required?2.
